Camden Electric Buses

Electric Buses Coming to Camden

NJ TRANSIT’s Board of Directors recently approved the purchase of eight electric buses for the Camden region. This is the agency’s first purchase of all-electric buses and a step towards transitioning to a 100% zero-emissions fleet by 2040.

The board approved a $9.4 million contract with New Flyer of America to source the 40-foot battery-electric buses. The project will provide invaluable information on the operating characteristics of electric buses including the impacts of weather, passenger volume, and road conditions on battery range.

The new buses are the first step towards meeting Governor Murphy’s goals to increase the use of zero-emissions vehicles in New Jersey, including:

⦁ At least 10 percent of NJ TRANSIT’s new bus purchases will be zero-emission by December 31, 2024
⦁ At least 50 percent of NJ TRANSIT’s new bus purchases will be zero-emission by December 31, 2026
⦁ 100 percent of NJ TRANSIT’s new bus purchases will be zero-emission by December 31, 2032
