Why Choose a Bike or Walk Commute?

Embracing biking and walking as part of your everyday routine, whether it be during your commute, to run errands, or just for fun, benefits you and your surrounding community in a number of ways.

Health

Walking and biking are easy ways to work physical activity into your daily routine. They have proven effective in reversing the effects of weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other diseases. Biking and walking have also been shown to be positive for your mental health by reducing stress and feelings of depression. The world is a happier when you’re not stuck in traffic.

Cost Savings

Replacing some or all of your car trips with biking and walking saves you money. Driving can be expensive. Walking and biking are free. And if you walk and bike enough, it will basically become a free gym membership. Studies have shown that much of the costs saved through replacing your car with biking and walking also stays in the local economy, being spent at local restaurants and shops. Buying tacos is way more fun than buying gas.

Environment

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) estimates that on-road transportation accounts for 37.3% of gross greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in New Jersey. Replacing some of your car trips with biking and walking will reduce the volume of these harmful emissions. Do your part to create cleaner air and address climate change. RUTI

Ruti is a text-message-based, trip planning tool that finds the bike route with the least amount of car traffic, or traffic stress.
Ruti is a collaboration between AG Strategic Design, a web development firm based in Philadelphia, and the Delaware valley regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). The conversational app uses Google Maps routing information and DVRPC’s Bike Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) data analysis to find the most comfortable bike route between two destinations. The resulting route map depicts the “stress level” of each part of a bike route so riders can see where traffic or stress is highest.
DVRPC’s Bike LTS analysis has rated over 29,500 miles of roadway in the nine-county Greater Philadelphia region. The analysis accounts for each road segment’s number of traffic lanes, speed limit, and presence of different types of bike infrastructure, such as sharrows, bike lanes, or protected bike lanes.
